Pandit Ram Sundar Pandey (Shastri)
Pandit Ram Sundar Pandey (Shastri) was a distinguished Indian freedom fighter, political leader, and education reformer from the Purvanchal region of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Revered as the “Malaviya of Purvanchal,” he combined revolutionary activism with a lifelong mission to expand rural education and social upliftment.
Freedom Struggle & Political Leadership
A committed nationalist, he actively participated in the Quit India Movement and other anti-colonial struggles against British rule. Operating primarily in the Mau and Ghazipur regions, he worked alongside fellow revolutionaries to mobilize rural communities in the fight for independence.
After independence, he transitioned into public life to continue his service through democratic means. He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Uttar Pradesh and became a prominent voice for rural development, social reform, and agricultural advancement.

- Ram Sundar Pandey Mahavidyalaya: Established to provide undergraduate and postgraduate education in Arts and Sciences; currently affiliated with Maharaja Suhel Dev State University, Azamgarh.
- Focus on the Underprivileged: Ensured that students from economically weaker and agrarian backgrounds could pursue higher education without migrating to distant cities.
Legacy & Commemoration
His life and contributions are commemorated annually on January 12 at Fatehpur Mandao, Mau district, where community members and political leaders gather to honor his enduring impact on India’s independence movement and the intellectual transformation of Purvanchal.
